Sun, 10 August 2008 It'll take a big bunny to chew on this one
Prising a giant 15_pronged mutant carrot out of your vege patch is one thing - working out what to do with it is another.
Berhampore resident Archie Holmes, 96, doubts there is a vegetable peeler robust enough to deal to his 1.5 kilogram carrot, which he is keeping in a bucket of water by his back door.
"I've got no idea what I'm going to do with the thing, but i bet it tastes nice."
The retired parliamentary security guard has been growing and eating his own vegetables for most of his life, but wrenching the pineapple-sized carrot out of the ground at the weekend ranks as his most unusual gardening moment.
"I was flabbergasted. I had to use a spade to help get it out and as it came up I could see all the pronged buts poking out. I have never seen anything like that in my life."
While a hefty 19-pronged, 8.6kg specimen grown in Alaska in 1998 tops the scales as the world's largest carrot, Mr Holmes is unsure how his stacks up against others grown locally.
Crop & food Research scientist Jeff Reid said the rare carrot deformity was probably a result of being grown in a spacious and nutrient-rich garden, and a delayed summer.
"Without the normal heat and sunlight levels, the cold start to summer has kept the carrot at an undeveloped stage. Its like a teenager that keeps growing.
"At an early stage of development, the carrot's fibrous roots have split and each fang has decided to grow".
