Thu, 2 August 2007 Bunnies abandoned by bored families
Bunnies are turning up left, right and centre at the Mangere SPCA as the novelty of this year's Easter gift wears off.
SPCA employee Jenna Fowler says 13 rabbits are ready for adoption and another 13 are waiting to come up for adoption, including two pairs.
The influx is a result of people who have chosen to get a bunny at Easter but now realise their fluffy friend is more work than they bargained for, she says.
"People think because rabbits are cute and cuddly they're easy to care for but they require more attention than a cat."
Ms Fowler says the SPCA has a variety of rabbits available, including angoras, lops and flemish giants in many different colours.
The main prerequisite for adopting a rabbit is that it will have suitable shelter.
SPCA rabbit attendant Bronwen Cleugh says rabbits can make fantastic pets if they are looked after correctly.
"They are intelligent animals and can be easily toilet trained so they can live indoors although you need to watch them with electrical cords and house plants," she says.
But they're not ideal pets for young children because they might not like to be picked up and can be easily injured if mishandled or dropped.
"They are very social animals and need lots of attention from their owner," Ms Cleugh says.
"Unfortunately, many rabbits are bought for children during Easter as presents. When the novelty wears off the rabbit is left to spend long hours alone in a hutch and they become difficult for children to handle so they are ignored even more."
Anyone prepared to make a bunny part of their family can visit the SPCA Animal Village at 50 Westney Rd, Mangere. It is open every day from 10am to 4pm.
